    Public Health Weekly Report 2021; 14(14): 784-799
    Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious health problem in Korea. Among the 36 OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development member countries) in 2020, the Republic of Korea ranked the highest incidence (59 per 100,000 population) and the second-highest TB mortality rate (4.0 per 100,000 population). The aim of this paper was to examine the characteristics of notified TB cases in 2020. Findings indicated that, in 2020, the overall notification rate of new TB cases was 38.8 per 100,000 population, with a reduction of 16.4% from the 2019 rate. Also, 49.1% of new TB cases involved elderly patients aged 65 years or older and the new TB notification rate of the elderly was 120.3 per 100,000 population, with a reduction of 17.2% from the 2019 rate. The crude incidence in foreign-born TB patients decreased from 1,597 in 2019 to 1,316 in 2020. Beneficiaries of medical aid, the socioeconomically vulnerable population, had a 3.8 times higher rate of new TB notification compared to beneficiaries of mandatory social health insurance. The number of multidrug-resistant TB cases dropped from 580 in 2019 to 399 in 2020. In 2021, to reduce the TB burden, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) implemented the ‘Measures to Strengthen TB Prevention Management,’ established in 2019 and so should be able to reach the goal of ending TB in 2030.

    Abstract

In order to monitoring of Japanese encephalitis (JE) outbreak in South Korea, vector mosquitoes were collected by operating black light trap in twice a week at nine locations across the whole country from April to October 2020. The number of individuals collected per trap per day was calculated and analyzed for comparison. In 2020 collecting period, 10,635 mosquitoes were collected, which marked a 53.7% decrease from 2019 when 22,962 mosquitoes were collected. Among the total mosquitoes density, the occurrence rate of vector mosquitoes density was 16.5% in 2020; a 8.5% increase from 2019. Due to the low average temperature and large number of precipitation days and amounts, the total number of mosquitoes decreased in the summer months of 2020.
In addition, large amounts of precipitation in late summer and warmer temperature in early autumn contributed to the creation of suitable habitats for vector mosquito larvae growth. Thus, the rate of occurrence of vector mosquitoes increased from 2019. 2020 JE watch and warning were issued on March 26 and July 23, respectively, and we need continuously monitoring and data analysis in high JE outbreak regions.
