Legal and Medical Screening Criteria for Live Liver Donors

    Choi Eun Kyung

    Public Health Weekly Report 2020; 13(3): 128-139
    Abstract

This study aimed to examine the medico-legal screening criteria of living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) and policy options. This study reviewed the statistics, legal systems, and medical guidelines surrounding domestic (i.e., Korean) and international LDLT. Findings highlighted the need to improve live liver donation in Korea. This study recommended that, after a revision of the current law surrounding LDLT, informed consent procedures of live liver donors must be specified in the law and live liver donations from minors must be strictly prohibited. It was further recommended that medical institutions establish dedicated teams responsible for carrying out psychosocial and medical assessments of donors throughout the entire donation process. Moreover, this study recommended the introduction of a nationwide monitoring system of live liver donors and recipients.

Kim Ki Chul, Choi Won Jun, Kim Tae Kyun

    Public Health Weekly Report 2020; 13(3): 140-152
    Abstract

This statistical study conducted a survey to identify the current state of public awareness of hematopoietic stem cell and cord blood (CB) donation in Korea, including the level and type of awareness. According to the results, seven out of ten respondents were aware of hematopoietic stem cell donation and five out of ten were willing to donate. Of the respondents who were not willing to donate, 40.9% stated that the most common reason was ‘vague fear.’ This study was timely and meaningful as it provided support for increased donation registration. Furthermore, this study had the potential to result in transplants for 4,497 recipients who were on the transplant waiting list as of 2018. This study concluded that there was great significance in contributing to the vitalization of a donation culture to expedite transplants.
