    Public Health Weekly Report 2023; 16(30): 1009-1024 https://doi.org/10.56786/PHWR.2023.16.30.1
    Abstract

The aim of the study is to analyze the factors of individuals and campaign messages to effectively prevent cardiovascular disease. We conducted an experiment with a young-aged group (in their 30s) and a middle-aged group (in their 50s) to test the effect of types of sources (celebrity vs. non-celebrity) and individuals’ characteristics (same age with campaign model) on empathy. This study found that the middle-aged group tended to have higher empathy for sources compared to a young-aged group across all conditions, especially showed higher empathy for the condition with non-celebrity. Young-aged group showed lower empathy in general than the middle-aged group, but indicated higher empathy to the condition with a celebrity model in their age. Additionally, we also analyzed qualitative data to improve the quality of campaign messages. The data revealed that middle-aged people had favorable attitudes towards campaign messages, and prefer easy-to-understand messages and a non-celebrity model who they can identify with. Young-aged group indicated relatively unfavorable attitudes toward campaign messages. They wanted campaign messages to emphasize potential health risks and give them more specific guidelines to maintain health. We suggest the campaign message targeting the middle-aged group could use non-celebrity whereas that of the young-age group use celebrity in their age. The importance of “WHY & HOW” messages strategy for cardio-cerebrovascular disease prevention campaign was discussed.

Epidemiological Characteristics of Cases and Deaths of Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS), 2022

Jihyun Choi, Ji-hye Hwang, Hyeonsu Lee, Kyungwon Hwang*

    Public Health Weekly Report 2023; 16(30): 1025-1037 https://doi.org/10.56786/PHWR.2023.16.30.2
    Abstract

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a vector-borne and zoonotic diseases caused by ticks. It has been classified as a third-class legal communicable disease and is managed in the Republic of Korea (ROK). In this study, the purpose of this study was to analyze the epidemiological characteristics of SFTS patients and deaths in 2022 in order to identify variables that require intensive management and enhance prevention and management measures based on these findings. In 2022, cases were reported between April and November. Around 49.7% of the patients were engaged in farming activities, while 45.1% were involved in other outdoor activities such as collecting forest products, hiking, walking, and camping. Patients visited the hospital due to symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and digestive system. It was observed that patients with underlying diseases faced a higher risk of death. SFTS is an infectious disease with a high mortality rate (18.7% in the ROK from 2013 to 2022), yet no vaccine or treatment exists. Therefore, preventive measures should be followed to avoid tick exposure. Especially considering the pattern of occurrence, prevention and promotion projects are needed, including not only farmers, who are known to be high-risk groups, but also populations with frequent outdoor activities such as hiking, walking, and camping. Additionally, further research is necessary to investigate the correlation between climate change and SFTS occurrence, as well as the scope and mechanisms of underlying diseases that correspond to high-risk groups.

Results of Emergency Department Based Injury In-depth Surveillance, 2011 and 2021

BoNa Hwang, SoHyun Park, Jungeun Lee, Woncho Bae*

    Public Health Weekly Report 2023; 16(30): 1038-1050 https://doi.org/10.56786/PHWR.2023.16.30.3
    Abstract

Injury means physical or psychological damage from accidents or addictions. Mortalities from injuries account for half of the deaths in teenagers and people in their 30s, affecting the loss of working age population. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency created a monitoring system to investigate injury accidents and develop preventive measures. The Emergency Department based Injury In-depth Surveillance is one of the key Injury investigation and monitoring projects that, inspects the causes and features of injuries that patients have. This data shows the types of injured patients from 2011 to 2021 and aims to provide the causes of injuries and present the data to prevent them. In 2021, the total injured patients were at a record low of 190,496. In 2011, male patients still accounted for a higher percentage than females. However, there were more patients aged ≥60 years in 2021 than in 2011, while the percentage of teenage patients decreased. Unintentional injuries accounted for 90.4% of cases, while intentional injuries made up the rest. Within intentional injuries, suicide attempts and self-harm by teenagers (5.2%p) and people in their 20s (9.2%p) increased in 2021 compared to 2011. Blunt injuries and transportation accidents have decreased, but falls and fall-related injuries have increased. Injuries occurred most frequently in homes (47.7%), on the roads (22.4%), and in commercial facilities (8.6%). In particular what we know is that people in their 60s are vulnerable to falls and fall-related injuries and teenagers to suicide and self-injury, which prompts the requirement of social safety net installations.

Introduction to the National Immunization Vaccine Supply and Demand Management System

Juhong Kim, Minjeong Kim, Suyeon Jeong, Kueyoung Lee, Joonku Park*

    Public Health Weekly Report 2023; 16(30): 1051-1065 https://doi.org/10.56786/PHWR.2023.16.30.4
    Abstract

Currently, the National Immunization Program (NIP) has been vulnerable due to its reliance on the private sector for vaccine supply. To respond to unexpected supply shortage situations due to various factors such as uprise of infectious disease and changes in vaccine supply and demand, we have prepared the Strategy for Stabilization of Essential Immunization Vaccine Supply (July, 2018). For efficient vaccine supply and strengthening of national distribution, we are implementing a reformation of supply system and storage of vaccines whose needs are difficult to meet immediately in situations of unstable domestic supply. Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency is striving continuously to achieve stable supply of NIP vaccines by strengthen monitoring of vaccine supply and cooperating with local government and medical sector.
