    Public Health Weekly Report 2021; 14(6): 282-289
    Abstract

Coronavirus disease 2019 (hereinafter referred to as COVID-19) has not abated since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a global pandemic on March 11, 2020. The Korean government has managed to suppress patient outbreak and minimize the damage from large-scale mass infection through the 3Ts (Testing, Tracing, and Treatment) strategy and social distancing adjustment. This study explained the reproduction number, an important index for assessing the effect of government response to COVID-19 and monitoring the transmission pattern. This study also confirmed that the reproduction number is a useful indicator in estimating the transmission pattern of infectious diseases according to the effect of government response. Although we are currently in the mitigation phase of COVID-19, new cases are still being confirmed. Thus, continuous monitoring of various effects of the response to COVID-19 is needed by calculating the reproduction number.

Strengthened COVID-19 Medical Triage Response to the Influx of Variants at the Incheon Airport National Quarantine Station, 2021

    Public Health Weekly Report 2021; 14(6): 290-296
    Abstract

SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) has undergone many changes and variants have been reported worldwide. Three variants that share the N501Y mutation were identified: one in the United Kingdom (UK) identified as B.1.1.7, one in Republic of South Africa identified as B.1.351, and one in Brazil identified as P.1. Although mutations are an expected part of the spread of any virus, continued monitoring, prevention and surveillance are essential. The aim of this report was to share the results of the medical triage response to the influx of COVID-19 variants at the Incheon Airport National Quarantine Station (IANQS).
Findings indicated that the IANQS adapted the COVID-19 medical triage for variant countries through the adjustment of body temperature, epidemiological investigations of inbound arrivals, and COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing of all inbound arrivals from variant countries.
As a result of strengthened COVID-19 medical triage and reinforced quarantine for arrivals from variant countries, and by responding quickly to national policy according to the influx of variants, the first case from three variant countries was confirmed at the IANQS in December 2020(B.1.1.7), and two other variants were confirmed at the IANQS in January 2021(B.1.351, P.1). Although variant cases are expected to continue, community transmission was blocked in advance due to the medical triage response at the IANQS. This report recommended that the IANQS continue to block the spread of identified variants and be prepared to respond to emerging variants

Choi Hongjo, Seo Jeongmi, Jeong Dawoon, Han Jiyeon, Kim Jaetae, Kwon Yunhyung, Shim Eunhye

    Public Health Weekly Report 2021; 14(6): 297-308
    Abstract

Objective: The study was performed to identify outcomes of a pilot project of community-based care and management for tuberculosis patients. Methods: During the study period, we conducted a vulnerability assessment for all notified tuberculosis patients and implemented an enhanced case management according to the grade of the vulnerability. Findings: As a result, firstly, the intermediate and high vulnerable groups were likely to be associated with unfavorable outcomes compared with the low-vulnerable group. Furthermore, among the intermediate and high-vulnerable groups, the enhanced case management was tended to be inversely associated with unfavorable outcomes, but with little statistical significance.
